With a record 26 boats in the Double-Handed Division, Richard du Moulin, Christopher Reyling, and Lora Ann are going after their fifth straight victory. The most demanding part is the Gulf Stream. “That’s when we need two pair of eyes,” said du Moulin.

Three classic Cal 40s are racing to Bermuda this year, one from the West Coast. “We’ve invested a lot in this race,” says Bill LeRoy after bringing Gone with the Wind east from San Francisco. “We want to push Sinn Fein hard.”

Everybody’s a little nervous before the start of any race, but here the race is to Bermuda. Crews are stowing gear, buying food, testing sails, and second-guessing the weather. One boat even has to get to Newport from Bermuda.

The Newport Bermuda Race is hard enough to win once. But twice? In 46 races since 1906, just three boats have won the major prize, the St. David’s Lighthouse Trophy, at least two times. A Pair of these boats won consecutive races – Carleton Mitchell’s fabled Finisterre in 1956-60 and, in the two most recent races in 2006 and 2008, Peter S. Rebovich’s Sinn Fein, from New Jersey’s Raritan Yacht Club. Rebovich and his usual crew will be back again this year with the gleam of a third St. David’s Lighthouse Trophy in their eyes.
