One of the many issues our Bermuda Race captain in Titan XV, Scotty Bradford, was chasing down was making sure the new sail measurements were sent to the U.S. Sailing measurement office.

I stopped in there to see how the certificates were progressing and I found a calm group with a still-daunting task.

“It can get pretty hectic. The due date for IRC and ORR certificates was June 5,” said Eric Baittinger, the lead IRC person at U.S. Sailing. “We’ve been dealing with certificates for the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta and, to compound things, the Chicago Mac race certificates are due this weekend.”

As of Monday morning, June 14, 22 Bermuda Race certificates had not been filed with race headquarters at the New York Yacht Club’s Sailing Center. Two of the five divisions in the Bermuda Race provide for dual scoring in both ORR and IRC:  Gibbs Hill and St. David’s.  The North Rock Beacon Trophy goes to the top boat under IRC.  The other divisions – Cruiser, Double-Handed, and Open – are scored only under ORR.

Baittinger said the biggest challenges are following up on measurement changes and then working with his staff to make sure changes are in sync in both ORR and IRC certificates.
