Q: What is the safety seminar attendance requirement for racing boats?
A: A minimum of 30% of all crew members shall have attended a US SAILING-sanctioned safety-at-sea seminar within five years of the start of the race. The captain and either the navigator or a watch captain must be included in the required 30%. In addition, two members of each crew must hold First-Aid certificates and two members CPR certificates. For Double-Handed Division yachts, both crewmembers must attend a seminar and hold First Aid and CPR certificates.
Q: Where can I attend a Safety at Sea Seminar?
A: There will be a Safety at Sea Seminar in Newport, RI on June 13, 2012. Information on this seminar and others can be found from the US Sailing website.
Q. I have a current First Aid and CPR certificate from the American Heart Association. Does this meet the requirement?
A. The acceptable US courses are listed on the US Sailing Web Site. The race requirement is that each boat have two people with current First Aid Certificates and two with current CPR Certificates on board. This requirement (OSR 6.05.2) is met when the Captain submits copies of these four cards for review to documents@bermudarace.com with the Pre-Inspection Documention paperwork for the boat.
