John Bledsoe Bonds – conscience of sailing, safety innovator and authority, and former Executive Director of U.S. Sailing – died on board his boat, Alliance, at Newport, R.I., on the night of June 8. He was 70. He and his wife, Beth, lived in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

Bermuda Race Names West Marine Official Supplier

The Bermuda Race Organizing Committee has named West Marine as an official supplier for the 47th Newport Bermuda Race. On May 28, West Marine opens its new Newport Flagship West Marine store in Middletown, RI. The new store will provide free transportation for Newport Bermuda Race sailors between the Newport waterfront and the store.

With 196 entries, the 47th Newport Bermuda Race fleet is on track to be the third largest in the race’s history. The race has a wide range of boats. Niklas Zennstrom’s Rán in her first year won the 2009 Fastnet Race and also took Class 1 in the Sydney-Hobart, while St. David’s Lighthouse Trophy winner in 2006 and 2008, Sinn Fein, owned by Peter Rebovich, is a victory away from matching one of sailing’s most hallowed records – three straight Bermuda Race wins.
Newport Bermuda Race Chooses New York Yacht Club As Newport Race Headquarters

The Newport Bermuda Race Organizing Committee has announced that the pre-race headquarters will be the Sailing Center at the New York Yacht Club's Newport clubhouse, Harbour Court. Crews may use the clubhouse and its facilities before the race's start on June 18.
