After a race that featured light air for the biggest, fastest boats--and a long, hard, upwind slog for the rest of the fleet--the winners of the 2008 Newport Bermuda Race have been determined.
Peter Rebovich’s Cal 40 Sinn Fein cleaned house, winning the race-signature St. David’s Lighthouse trophy for the second race in a row.
In the professional Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Division, Julien Dougherty’s Beneteau First 36.7 Tenacious beat a highly-competitive field that included the newest, fast offshore racing boats in the country, taking home the race’s other Lighthouse trophy.
The new North Rock Beacon Trophy, scored under IRC, was also won by Sinn Fein.
Veteran short-handed sailor Rich duMoulin and his crew Chris Rayling took home the silver for the Double-Handed Division aboard Lora Ann.
In the Cruiser Division, Paul Hubbard’s Bermuda Oyster was overall winner, bringing a sweet victory to home-town fans in the island nation.
The showdown in the canting-keel Open Division saw Ron O’Hanley’s Cookson 50 Privateer edge out Ken Read’s VO 70 Il Mostro.
