Newport RI- July 14, 2015: The Bermuda Race Organizing Committee (BROC) has named Brewer Yacht Yard Group as the Official Boat Preparation Resource for the 2016 Newport Bermuda Race. Said Bermuda Race Organizing Committee Chairman A. J. Evans, “We are very happy to welcome back the Brewer team as members of the sponsor family for the 50th Bermuda Race. BROC is especially pleased that Brewer will again bring its expertise to sailors with its race-preparation seminars.”
The first of Brewer’s Newport Bermuda Race Seminars will be held Saturday, August 22, 2015, at the New York Yacht Club’s Harbour Court clubhouse in Newport, RI. Speakers will include Rives Potts, owner-skipper of the 2010 and 2012 St. David’s Lighthouse Trophy winner 'Carina', Michael Keyworth, VP and GM of Brewer Cove Haven Marina, and Newport Bermuda Race Chief Inspector James Phyfe.
A team of Brewer experts will discuss the elements of the most commonly used offshore safety standards, including the ISAF Offshore Special Regulations (OSR) and US Sailing Special Equipment Requirements (USSER). Using images and demonstrations, presenters will discuss the intent behind each requirement and straightforward methods of compliance that won’t break the bank.
At these hands-on seminars, the Brewer team will provide race-ready boats for attendees to tour as well as tools and equipment for them to try out, with extended demonstrations and discussions. The seminars are intended to be hands-on and attendees are encouraged to bring their questions.
While particular emphasis will be placed on the requirements for the 2016 Newport Bermuda Race, common provisions of all offshore racing requirements will be discussed and ample time will be allowed for questions and answers. Topics will include: hull construction and stability; rigging and sail selection (including storm sails); safety and emergency equipment; training and Safety at Sea credentials; and, navigation and communications devices.
Of value to racers and cruisers alike, the Brewer Newport Bermuda Race seminars will give anyone preparing their boat for long-distance racing or extended voyaging the peace of mind that comes with hearing from the most experienced advisers in the industry. All attendees will receive a complimentary copy of The US Safety Equipment Requirements and ISAF Offshore Special Regulations, 2014-2015 ed., published by US Sailing.
The cost of $125 per boat entitles all crew members to attend. Proceeds will be donated to the Bonnell Cove Foundation to further safety at sea research and education. For more information on the seminar and to register, please visit www.byy.com/NBR or contact Lynn Oliver at [email protected].
