Two Sites for Matching Boat and Crew
New for the 2020 Newport Bermuda Race, organizers team up with a pair of online platforms to help sailors, skippers, and race boats connect: RailMeets.com and tendrr.co. Both platforms provide a free service for amateur competitors.
Crew: On either platform, sign up for a free account and write a persuasive (and truthful!) profile. Points to consider include:
- Your experience, particularly in offshore races
- What positions you have strengths in
- Your availability for practice
- Your certifications, such as Safety at Sea Courses, First Aid
- Your other skill sets, such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing
A great way to get into offshore sailing is to first complete a delivery. Crew who sail the delivery home after the Bermuda Race prove their mettle, build relationships, and typically become candidates to join a race crew.
Skippers: Find competent, qualified race crew with a listing on either platform, for the race or return trip. Specify position, skills and experience required, and connect directly with available crew. Unless you are running a charter operation, it’s a free service.
RailMeets.com – Skipper’s page
Crews looking for boats and skippers looking for crews are invited to sign up for free at RailMeets.com, a U.S.-based site that has set up a special filter for the Newport Bermuda Race. This filter allows Interested Crews to show their interest in the Bermuda Race. Interested Skippers can then sort crew profiles, by interest in the Bermuda Race, as well as skill level at various positions, experience, certifications, and locations. Skippers can then reach out to potential crew members of interest. Note that until crews and boats register interest, the filters will be empty, so don’t be discouraged and check back periodically. All contacts are made through the RailMeets.com website, protecting people’s privacy and personal emails. Crew Member and Boat profiles are maintained by the users, and may be modified or deleted at any time.
has set up a special Newport Bermuda Race CrewMatch page for skippers to find crew and crews to find boats. Both are invited to sign up for free to connect with available, competent sailors and start building your winning race team!
Skippers: If you’re shorthanded, create a crew request using the Bermuda Race’s tendrr page. Let your crew mates know what position or experience you’re looking for and you’ll be connected directly with available crew ready to sail.
Crew: Be the first to know about all crew requests for the Bermuda Race by following our tendrr page. Click the star logo at the top of the page or the Follow button and you’ll receive an update each time a new crew request is added. All the contacts are made through the tendrr.co website, protecting people’s privacy and personal emails. Crew Member and Boat profiles are maintained by the users, and may be modified or deleted at any time.
