The 2024 Newport Bermuda Race began with an exciting new feature—starting off Fort Adams in Newport, Rhode Island—bringing the action closer to the public. Over 4,000 spectators gathered in person, just feet from the starting line, while an additional 12,000 tuned in online to watch the Starting Line Live Show and Party. Together, they witnessed 165 boats embark on the iconic 636-mile journey to Bermuda.
This year’s race was truly one for the books, challenging sailors from start to finish. The fleet faced close-reaching conditions and a complex meander through the Gulf Stream. The tough sea state led to multiple breakages, including two abandoned boats. Fortunately, no injuries or loss of life occurred, underscoring the critical importance of safety-at-sea training.
Bermuda once again rolled out its signature hospitality, welcoming over 2,000 sailors, friends, and family for a celebration of camaraderie and offshore sailing. The island proved itself a fitting host, creating unforgettable memories for all who arrived at the finish line.
